ABOUT RED DEER SLEEP & HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY

There's usually more to the story

Sleep, physical health, trauma, and emotional well-being have a way of overlapping. At Red Deer, we’re interested in those connections, especially when a straightforward explanation doesn’t account for everything you’re experiencing. Our work brings specialized psychological care together with curiosity, flexibility, and an openness to experiences that aren’t always easy to explain.

We Pay Attention to the Parts That Don’t Fit Neatly in a Box

GOOD CARE STARTS WITH CURIOSITY ABOUT THE WHOLE PICTURE.

The body doesn’t always separate sleep from stress, trauma from physical symptoms, or medical conditions from emotional well-being as neatly as healthcare specialties do. One can influence another, and understanding those connections can change where treatment needs to begin.

That’s why we don’t come into the room with a predetermined answer. We draw from specialized training in sleep, health psychology, trauma, and mind-body approaches, paying attention to what’s happening now, what your body has been through, and what hasn’t responded to previous attempts at treatment.

The Heart Behind the Work

The way we practice is shaped by three values that keep us paying attention to the person in front of us. They influence what we notice, how we choose an approach, and when we recognize that treatment needs to change.

Core Values

Curiosity

WE WANT TO UNDERSTAND BEFORE WE DECIDE WHAT YOU NEED.

Curiosity keeps us from jumping too quickly to an explanation. We take time to understand your history, symptoms, experiences, and the things that may fall outside the usual clinical framework. We also help you bring that same curiosity to your own body, so unfamiliar sensations or responses can become something to understand rather than immediately fear or avoid.

Adaptability

YOUR CARE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHANGE AS YOU DO.

We don’t follow the same treatment sequence with every client. Our training across behavioral sleep medicine, trauma therapy, somatic work, clinical hypnosis, and acceptance-based approaches gives us options. We can adjust what we’re doing as we learn what helps, what doesn’t, and what you need from us next.

Intuition

PART OF FEELING BETTER IS LEARNING TO TRUST YOURSELF AGAIN.

When you’ve spent a long time feeling at odds with your body, it can become difficult to know which signals to trust. We pay attention to what is said and what may be harder to put into words, while helping you rebuild confidence in your own internal cues. Over time, the goal is for your body to feel less like something you have to monitor and more like something you can listen to.

Dyani's INTEREST IN THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION STARTED LONG BEFORE SHE BECAME A PSYCHOLOGIST.

She descends from a line of indigenous healers and was raised in part by her grandmother, a curandera. Those early experiences gave her an enduring respect for ways of understanding the body that can exist alongside rigorous psychological science.

Today, that perspective is backed by rare clinical specialization. Dyani is the first psychologist in Tennessee to hold both the Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine and Board Certification in Clinical Health Psychology. Her work brings together behavioral sleep medicine, clinical hypnosis, trauma treatment, and mind-body approaches for people dealing with complex sleep and health concerns. Her own experience living with chronic illness also informs the way she understands what it can be like when your body becomes difficult to trust.

Her grandmother also introduced her to the concept of Susto, a traditional understanding of what can happen after trauma when a person feels as though some part of themselves has gone missing. Dyani carries the heart of that idea into her work today: helping people feel more at home in themselves and their bodies again.

FOR SKYLER, GOOD TREATMENT HAS TO WORK IN THE LIFE SOMEONE ACTUALLY LIVES.

The first in his family to attend college, Skyler grew up in rural Southwest Ohio. That upbringing shaped the grounded, compassionate, and persistent way he approaches his work today. He has spent his career working with diverse communities, including providing care to Veterans and Special Forces whose lives have been affected by disrupted sleep, chronic pain, and trauma.

Skyler specializes in health psychology, behavioral sleep medicine, trauma, and biological rhythms, with particular expertise in chronic insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders. His approach is practical and highly individualized, taking into account not only what happens at night, but the rhythms, demands, and patterns of daily life that can affect how well someone sleeps.

At Red Deer, Skyler brings scientific rigor together with the kind of care that pays attention to the individual rather than simply applying a standard protocol. His work with Dyani helps anchor the practice in a shared belief that effective treatment can be evidence-based, highly specialized, and responsive to the person receiving it.

Insurance Information

Understanding Your Coverage

Copays and deductibles are due at the time of your session.

Red Deer is in network with traditional Medicare and BlueCross BlueShield. Coverage depends on your individual plan, diagnosis, and the type of care you receive, so not every service or approach we offer is necessarily covered by insurance.

For sleep therapy, health psychology, and work involving children or family members, coverage can depend on how the service relates to the identified client’s treatment. We encourage you to confirm your behavioral health benefits directly with your insurer before beginning care.
